Is Hate Stitched into the Fabric of our Nation?

The red stripes and blue stars were created using shibori with procion dye and indigo. The silkscreened words stitched onto the flag illustrate hate speech and hate groups, and some are direct quotes from our former president. The flag was then distressed by over-dyeing with tea and adding burn holes.

As the pandemic was raging and the President continued perpetrating his Big Lie, tensions in the country were running high and my fear of the future was intensifying. As I watched the events unfolding at the Capital on January 6th, my anger began to replace my fear. Why was there so much hate? Was this hate so embedded in the fabric of our nation that it would be impossible to eradicate? Creating this flag was a way to capture those feelings about the current state of our nation and the confrontation at the Capital. The process of creation was truly cathartic for me and hopefully will help the viewer process their feelings regarding the events of January 6, 2021.
